Humana Medicare Advantage 2027: What Kansas City Should Know

By Cole Insure. Reviewed by a licensed Cole Insure agent. October 29, 2026.

Humana is one of the biggest Medicare Advantage companies in the Kansas City area. This summer it said it will end some of its plans for 2027. If you have a Humana card, you may be wondering if that means you. Here is what we know, what we do not know yet, and how to check your own plan before December 7.

What Humana announced

On July 29, 2026, Humana told investors it will exit some Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The company expects those exits to affect about 600,000 members across the country. Humana said it is cutting its least profitable plans, and that most of them are rated 3.5 stars or lower. Becker’s reported the news the same day.

KFF, a health research group, later counted the changes by county. For 2027, Humana is leaving 62 counties and entering 4 new ones nationwide. KFF did not list them by state.

Humana is not leaving Medicare Advantage. It is ending some plans in some places and keeping others.

What this means for Kansas City

As of late October 2026, we have not seen a public list showing Humana leaving any county in the Kansas City metro, on the Missouri or the Kansas side. Humana has not published a full plan-by-plan list, so we cannot promise your exact plan is safe. Your mail can tell you for sure. More on that below.

What we can confirm is that two big local hospital systems still list Humana:

  • Saint Luke’s lists Humana Medicare Advantage plans in its Kansas City market as accepted for 2027 at Saint Luke’s Hospital, East, North and South.
  • NKC Health in North Kansas City lists Humana Medicare Advantage as accepted.

That matters this year, because other carriers lost local hospitals. Saint Luke’s leaves Aetna Medicare Advantage on January 1, 2027, and NKC Health left UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage on October 1, 2026. We explain both in Saint Luke’s leaving Aetna and NKC Health and Medicare Advantage. For the full picture across the metro, see Kansas City hospital networks for 2027.

How to tell if your Humana plan is ending

Check your mail from early October. A plan that is not coming back for 2027 had to send members a non-renewal letter, and those letters are dated October 2. It will say your plan is ending on December 31, 2026.

  • If you got a non-renewal letter, your plan ends December 31. You need to pick new coverage, and you have extra time and extra rights. See below.
  • If you did not get one, your plan is most likely continuing. It can still change. Read your Annual Notice of Change, which shows 2027 changes to your costs, drug list and network.

Lost the letter? Call the number on your card and ask, “Is my plan renewing for 2027?” Or call us and we will check for you.

If your plan is ending

You have more options than most people, but do not wait.

  • Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. Pick a new plan now and it starts January 1, with no gap.
  • A special window after that. People whose plan is ending get a Special Enrollment Period that runs from December 8 through the end of February. A plan you pick then starts the first of the next month, so you could have a gap if you wait.
  • A Medicare Supplement without health questions. When your Medicare Advantage plan ends, you can usually buy certain Medicare Supplement plans with no health questions. That right lasts until 63 days after your old plan ends. This is a rare chance to move to Original Medicare with a supplement and see any doctor who takes Medicare.

If your plan is staying

Most Humana members in Kansas City will keep their plan for 2027. That does not mean nothing changed. Plans that stay can still change copays, drug lists and networks each January. Spend ten minutes with your Annual Notice of Change, or let us do it with you.

What to do this week

  1. Find your Humana card and any Humana letters from October.
  2. Write down your doctors, your hospital, your medicines and your pharmacy.
  3. Check whether your plan is renewing, and read what changed for 2027.
  4. Call us before you change anything. We check your list against the 2027 plans we offer, and you decide.
