Lenexa and the towns around it
Lenexa is in Johnson County, Kansas, between Shawnee to the north, Overland Park to the east and Olathe to the south, with De Soto out west along K-10. People here see doctors all over the county and often in Kansas City, Kansas too. Some keep a long-time specialist in Kansas City, Missouri.
Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans are offered by county, so Lenexa shares a plan list with the rest of Johnson County. We start with your ZIP code, your doctors and your medicines, then show you the plans we offer that fit.
Turning 65 in Lenexa: the order to do things
Many people call us a few months before 65 asking where to begin. Here is the order we suggest:
- Decide about Part B. If you or your spouse still work and have group health coverage, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. If not, you generally want Parts A and B to start the month you turn 65. Call us if you are not sure. This is the step people most often get wrong.
- Sign up with Social Security. Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months long: the 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the 3 months after. Apply online at ssa.gov, call 1-800-772-1213, or visit the Lenexa office below.
- Make your lists. Doctors, hospital, pharmacy, medicines with doses. This is what we check plans against.
- Choose how to fill the gaps. Original Medicare alone leaves you with no yearly limit on what you pay. Most people add either a Medicare Supplement plus a Part D drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. We compare both using your lists.
Our turning 65 page has the full checklist. Medicare's own rules on enrollment periods are at medicare.gov.
The Social Security office in Lenexa
Social Security, not Medicare and not us, handles signing up for Parts A and B. Lenexa has the Social Security office that serves Johnson County, so people from Overland Park, Olathe and Shawnee come here too:
Social Security Office, Lenexa
15375 W 95th St, Lenexa, KS 66219
Local number: 1-877-445-9978. Nationwide: 1-800-772-1213.
The address is listed by the Kansas Department for Children and Families. Hours change, so confirm them on the ssa.gov office locator and make an appointment before you go. You do not need to visit in person to enroll. Online is usually quicker.
Hospitals and clinics people in Lenexa use
- AdventHealth Lenexa City Center, Lenexa. A hospital at 86th Street in the City Center area, with a 24-hour emergency room, surgery and specialty care. Part of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.
- AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, Merriam. The larger hospital in the same system, on 74th Street.
- Overland Park Regional Medical Center (HCA Midwest Health), Overland Park, on Quivira Road near I-435.
- Olathe Hospital (The University of Kansas Health System), Olathe. Formerly Olathe Medical Center.
- The University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas.
That is three health systems within a few miles of Lenexa. A Medicare Advantage network might include one and not the others, and it can change every year. We do not post network lists because they go stale. We check your doctors and hospital against each plan we offer before you decide. See how we check.
Call us first, before you pick a plan. Send us your doctors, hospital, pharmacy and medicines. We will check them against the plans we offer and show you what fits. Call (816) 307-6165 or book a free review.
Your pharmacy matters too
People check doctors and forget the pharmacy. Part D drug plans, and Advantage plans that include drug coverage, have their own pharmacy networks, and many charge you less at pharmacies they call "preferred." A plan that fits your doctors but not your pharmacy or your medicines can cost you every month. We run your medicine list through each plan we offer so you see the real yearly picture. Our Part D page explains how drug plans work, and this year's figures are on our costs page.
Veterans in Lenexa
If you served, the Lenexa VA Clinic is right in town at 15512 W 113th St. It offers primary care plus lab, pharmacy, X-ray, audiology, optometry, physical therapy, mental health and more. For hospital care, veterans here use the Kansas City VA Medical Center at 4801 Linwood Blvd in Kansas City, Missouri, or the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas. VA care and Medicare fit together, and Medicare can cover you at the hospitals above when the VA does not. We also help with TRICARE For Life and CHAMPVA. See our veterans page.
Kansas rules and free help
Medicare is federal, but Kansas sets some of its own rules for Medicare Supplement plans. Kansas does not have the yearly anniversary switching rule Missouri has, so your first Supplement choice here carries more weight. See how Missouri and Kansas compare.
