Medicare Advantage PPO Plans

More flexibility than an HMO. PPO plans let you see doctors in or out of network and skip the referrals, usually for a somewhat higher premium. Here is how they work.

What a PPO Plan Is

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) Medicare Advantage plan gives you a network of preferred providers but still covers care outside that network, just at a higher share of the cost. You do not need to choose a primary care doctor, and you generally do not need a referral to see a specialist.

That flexibility usually comes with a somewhat higher premium than an HMO, and your out-of-network costs are higher than in-network. Most PPOs include prescription drug coverage and extra benefits.

The Trade-Offs

More freedom

See in-network or out-of-network providers, and no referral needed for specialists.

Higher premium

Usually costs more than an HMO, and out-of-network care costs you more.

Travel friendly

Useful if you split time between states or want broader provider access.

Who a PPO Fits Best

A PPO suits you if you value flexibility, want to see specialists without referrals, or travel and want coverage beyond a single local network. If keeping the premium as low as possible matters most and your doctors are in network, an HMO may be the better value. We will compare both for your situation.
