The Seven-Month Window Nobody Explained: Turning 65 in Springfield, Illinois
The Window He Didn’t Know He Was In
Robert found out about his Initial Enrollment Period from a coworker, in passing, with about three weeks left in his window. He hadn’t applied for Social Security yet, so nothing had been automatic, and nobody had told him there was a clock running at all.
Three weeks was enough, barely. Plenty of Springfield seniors aren’t that lucky.
Not sure how much time you actually have left? Find out your exact enrollment window
Your Initial Enrollment Period
Seven months total: three before your birthday month, your birthday month, and three after. Miss it, and a permanent Part B late penalty follows you for as long as you have Medicare.
The Checklist, In Order
Confirm whether you’re automatic. You are if you’re already collecting Social Security. If not, nothing happens unless you apply.
Decide your path. Original Medicare plus a Supplement, or Medicare Advantage.
Apply for a Supplement during your Initial Enrollment Period if that’s your path, for the best underwriting terms available.
Check your drug coverage either way, Part D or an Advantage formulary, by name, not by category.
Confirm your Springfield-area providers are actually covered under whichever path you choose.

The Bottom Line
Robert’s three weeks worked out. The checklist exists so the next Springfield retiree doesn’t need a lucky coworker conversation to find out the clock was running.
