Three Weeks Left and Nobody Told Him: Turning 65 in Cornelius, North Carolina

May 22, 20261 min read

The Window He Almost Missed

Dave found out about his Initial Enrollment Period from a flyer at his gym, with about three weeks of his window left. He hadn’t applied for Social Security yet, so nothing about his enrollment had been automatic, and nobody had told him a clock was running at all.

Three weeks was enough. It’s a narrow margin to rely on.

Not sure exactly how much time you have left? Find out your real enrollment deadline

Your Initial Enrollment Period

Seven months total: three before your birthday month, your birthday month, and three after. Miss it, and a permanent Part B late penalty follows.

The Checklist

Confirm automatic enrollment status. Already collecting Social Security usually means automatic. If not, nothing happens without you applying.

Decide your path. Original Medicare plus a Supplement, or Medicare Advantage.

Apply for a Supplement within your window for the best underwriting terms available.

Check drug coverage by name, Part D or an Advantage formulary, either path.

Confirm your Cornelius and Charlotte-area providers are covered under whichever path you pick.

The Bottom Line

Dave’s gym flyer saved him by accident. The checklist exists so the next Lake Norman retiree doesn’t need that kind of luck.
