100 Days Sounded Like Plenty, Until It Wasn't

The Day the Coverage Stopped

The Andersons watched the days tick by during their father’s rehab stay, day 20, day 50, day 90, never once questioning what would happen at day 101. Then it arrived, and the bill changed entirely, because Medicare’s skilled nursing facility coverage has a hard stop, and nobody had explained that ahead of time.

The 3-Day Hospital Rule

SNF coverage requires a 3-day minimum, medically necessary inpatient stay first. Observation status doesn’t count, only a true inpatient admission.

What You Actually Pay

  • Days 1-20: $0
  • Days 21-100: $217/day in 2026
  • After day 100: all costs

No separate SNF deductible, just the daily coinsurance after day 20. A Medigap plan like Plan G typically covers it in full.

How Many Days Are Covered?

Up to 100 per benefit period, only the first 20 fully covered without cost-sharing.

What’s the 3-Day Rule?

A formal inpatient admission of at least 3 days, required before SNF coverage applies at all.

Does Medicare Cover a Nursing Home Forever?

No. This is short-term rehabilitative care, not long-term custodial care. That distinction is the one the Andersons learned too late.
