Will My Belton Doctor Still Take My Plan? NKC Health's 2026 Network Changes Explained

June 20, 20262 min read

A Notice That Changed Everything Mid-Year

Patients across the Kansas City metro, including many in Belton and the southern suburbs who use NKC Health providers, received a notice that’s easy to miss but expensive to ignore: NKC Health will no longer accept Cigna Medicare Advantage plans effective January 1, 2026, and UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans (Optum/AARP) effective April 1, 2026. NKC Health’s own warning was direct: patients “will likely have higher out-of-pocket costs or have limited coverage” if they stay on an affected plan.

The One Piece of Good News

Blue KC reached a separate agreement effective June 1, 2026, keeping Blue KC members in-network with NKC Health. If you’re on Blue KC, this particular change doesn’t affect you, a detail worth confirming directly rather than assuming either way.

What to Actually Check

If you use any NKC Health (formerly North Kansas City Hospital or Meritas Health) provider, confirm your specific plan’s status directly, don’t assume based on the carrier name alone, since agreements and timelines vary by plan type.

Why This Keeps Happening

This is part of a broader national pattern. KFF’s 2026 Medicare Advantage Spotlight found a sharp rise in plan terminations and network disruptions heading into 2026, UnitedHealthcare alone is exiting 225 counties while entering only 14 new ones. If you’ve been on the same plan for years without issue, that track record doesn’t guarantee next year looks the same.
