Why Two Neighbors With the Same Plan G Pay Completely Different Prices
Same Coverage, Different Bill
Helen and her next-door neighbor in Lee’s Summit compared notes one afternoon on the porch, the way neighbors do. Both had Plan G. Both had been on it for years. And somehow, Helen was paying almost $30 more a month for exactly the same coverage.
It wasn’t a mistake. It wasn’t fraud. It was simply two different insurance companies selling the federally identical Plan G benefit, at two different prices, and neither neighbor had ever bothered to compare.

What Plan G Covers, By Law
Every Plan G, no matter the company, covers the Part A deductible ($1,736 in 2026), Part A coinsurance, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, Part B excess charges, blood, hospice coinsurance, and foreign travel emergency care up to plan limits. The only thing it skips is the Part B annual deductible ($283 in 2026), which you pay yourself first.
Why the Price Still Varies
Because benefits are standardized, but pricing isn’t. Premiums shift based on your age, ZIP code, gender, and tobacco use, and different carriers price the exact same coverage hundreds of dollars apart annually. That’s the entire reason Helen’s neighbor was paying more, nothing about her coverage was different, just the math behind her carrier’s premium.

Why Did My Premium Go Up This Year?
Carriers adjust pricing for medical trend, age, and claims experience across their whole book of business, not because your individual coverage changed.
Plan G vs. Plan N
Plan N trades a lower premium for small copays (up to $20 office visit, up to $50 ER if not admitted) and no Part B excess charge coverage. Frequent doctor visits usually favor Plan G; rare visits might favor Plan N.
Does Plan G Cover Drugs?
No, that’s what Part D is for, a separate plan entirely.
