The Penalty That Follows You Forever: Part B Late Enrollment Explained
A Penalty With No Expiration Date
Most penalties eventually go away. The Part B late enrollment penalty doesn’t. It attaches to your premium for as long as you have Medicare, calculated from how long you went without coverage you should have had.

How the Penalty Is Calculated
For each full 12-month period you were eligible for Part B but didn’t enroll, your premium increases by 10%, permanently. There are exceptions, most commonly active employer coverage through your own or a spouse’s current job, which can delay enrollment without triggering the penalty.
The mistake we see most often: assuming VA coverage, COBRA, or retiree coverage counts as an exception. None of these do.

The Bottom Line
This penalty isn’t designed to be punitive for its own sake, it’s designed to encourage timely enrollment. But once it applies, it applies permanently, which makes checking your situation before you assume you’re covered worth the five minutes.
