What Belton Seniors Need to Know After Blue KC Left Medicare Advantage
The Letter That Arrived in Belton Mailboxes
It landed quietly in mailboxes across Belton and the surrounding Cass County area, a notice that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City would be exiting the Medicare Advantage market entirely. For the roughly 30,000 members affected metro-wide, it meant one thing: find a new plan, or risk defaulting into Original Medicare with no supplemental coverage at all.
Blue KC’s own CEO, Erin Stucky, put it plainly: “We explored every alternative path for our Medicare Advantage members and are disappointed we must exit this line of business.” The exit, citing heightened regulatory demands and rising market pressures, also ended access to Spira Care Centers for affected members.

What This Doesn’t Affect
Blue KC kept its Medicare Supplement, Part D, and other lines, only Medicare Advantage was discontinued. If you had a Blue KC Medigap policy, this change doesn’t touch it directly.
What Belton Residents Should Actually Do
If you were on a Blue KC Medicare Advantage plan, you needed to select a new plan during the next Annual Enrollment Period to avoid a coverage gap. If you’re reading this after that window closed, a Special Enrollment Period may still apply, since losing your plan’s availability is itself a qualifying event in many cases.

Why This Matters Beyond Belton
This wasn’t an isolated event. Nationally, KFF reports that 13% of Medicare Advantage enrollees, about 2.6 million people, are in a plan terminated for the 2026 plan year, more than double the prior year’s rate. Aetna alone is closing nearly 90 MA plans across 34 states. If your plan hasn’t been affected yet, it’s worth understanding that this kind of disruption is becoming more common, not less.
