The 2026 Medicare Annual Enrollment Guide for the Kansas City Metro

June 20, 20262 min read

Why This Year’s Enrollment Season Matters More Than Most

Across the Kansas City metro, more has changed heading into this Annual Enrollment Period than in a typical year. Blue KC’s exit from Medicare Advantage. NKC Health dropping Cigna and UnitedHealthcare MA contracts. A national wave of plan terminations affecting 13% of MA enrollees, more than double last year’s rate. If you live anywhere from Belton to Gladstone to Overland Park, there’s a real chance something about your coverage changed without you noticing yet.

Not sure if any of this year’s changes actually affect you? Get your full coverage reviewed before December 7

What AEP Actually Covers

October 15 through December 7, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Advantage and Original Medicare, or change Part D coverage. Changes take effect January 1. You can change your mind as many times as you want, only your last choice before the deadline counts.

Metro-Specific Things to Check This Year

If you were on Blue KC Medicare Advantage: you needed a new plan. If you haven’t selected one, this is urgent.

If you use NKC Health providers: confirm your plan still has a contract there for 2026.

If you’re in Missouri (Belton, Raymore, Lee’s Summit, Grandview, Independence, Liberty, Gladstone, Blue Springs): remember your Medigap Anniversary Rule exists separately from AEP, mark your policy anniversary date.

If you’re in Kansas (Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee): AEP is your main lever for MA and Part D changes; Medigap switches still generally require underwriting outside specific windows.

The Deadline That Doesn’t Move

December 7 doesn’t extend for confusion, busy schedules, or uncertainty. If any of this applies to you, the time to act is now, not after the deadline has already passed.
